About Whyte Dog Academy
What they do
Whyte Dog Academy runs two locations, one in Joplin, MO and one serving Northwest Arkansas.
The Joplin menu is daycare, Day Academy and The Academy; the Northwest Arkansas menu is day
training. The site's headline for the whole business is training built for real life.
The trainer
The About page is written in the first person by Joshua K Huffmaster Whyte, the owner and lead
trainer. He writes that he discovered dog training at nineteen, that it became a side hobby,
and that in 2016 he decided to work at it full time. He describes himself as a certified
master dog trainer; ask which body issued the certification.
Service dogs and companion dogs
The About page describes training service dogs for several purposes: aiding children with
autism, veterans dealing with PTSD, detecting diabetic episodes, responding to seizures,
assisting with mobility, and search and rescue work. It goes on to say that companion dogs are
where the owner's real interest lies, and that the aim there goes beyond obedience to
reintroducing peace into homes and fitting a dog into the family.
Approach
The stated approach rests on canine psychology, reading a dog's behavior and emotions in order
to communicate with it during training, and on teaching owners enough to keep the work going.
The site frames a wider goal of building responsible dog ownership locally.
