About Canine Care

Glencoe dog walking, puppy sitting and owner-facing training on the North Shore

Canine Care's home page describes the business as "Social Dog Walking, Puppy Sitting, and Training for People with Dogs in Glencoe, Highland Park, Winnetka, and Surrounding Suburbs", and says it has been doing that "since 1992". Its footer states the company is bonded and insured and lists its service area as Deerfield, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland Park, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka. The stated ethos on the about page is "a peaceful life for dogs and people", with the line the site says it has used all along: "it starts with the dog ends with the dog."

What the training actually is

Read the wording carefully, because it is unusual: the site's training service is owner coaching rather than a dog obedience course. The home page's own summary is "We train people for dogs. Grounded in agency, we afford dogs freedom of choice, to live a less fearful life. Results are dependent upon parental participation." The pricing page adds that an initial consultation happens "at our enrichment center" and would "typically last 2-3 hours", with the dog off leash while the plan is discussed; sessions after that are described as roughly an hour, held either at the client's place or theirs, and "how many sessions depends; it's typically a few." The site says the training is delivered by the founder.

Method

The about page states that "Our training is force free and inherently reward based", and that the company specializes in assisting dogs "who may be experiencing loneliness, boredom, anxiety, restlessness, jumping, pulling, and excessive barking". It is explicit about what it will not use: the site advises against "electric, prong, choke collars, cages, crates, treat training; and places where there are too many dogs, such as public off leash dog parks and doggie daycares", and the pricing page repeats "We don't use treats, crates, prong, electric, or choke collars." The named through-line is calming signals, the silent body language work the about page credits to Turid Rugaas, which it says the founder has studied since 1997.

Walking and puppy sitting

Social Dog Walking is described as walking dogs with other dogs, introduced first on a "Parallel Walk" at a distance and only then brought together on a "Social Walk", with walks "limited to three dogs per handler". The site says it drives to walk so the route is "not always the same walk around home", and that longer bookings buy the drive time out to a forest preserve or a private fenced yard. There is a stated minimum of two days per week, 36 weeks per year. Puppy Sitting is limited to dogs up to six months of age, with a three-consecutive-hour minimum, earliest start 8:00 am and latest end 6:00 pm; the site says it has no sitting service for dogs over six months and offers to share tips for finding a sitter instead.

Published rates

Rates are public on the prices and services page: Social Dog Walking on weekdays at $29 for 30 minutes, $37 for 45 minutes and $45 for 60 minutes, with a stated surcharge for each additional family dog and weekends priced higher; Puppy Sitting at $40 per hour subject to availability; and Training at $125 per hour. The staff side is described too: employees are W2, and the about page says they are given in-person training by the company's certified dog behavior specialist, covering calming signals, recall, loose leash walking, parallel walking and enrichment among other topics.
