About Dem Feuerhaus Gun Dogs
Gun dog training in Hondo
Dem Feuerhaus Gun Dogs is a small family breeding and training operation in Hondo, about 35 miles west of San Antonio, owned by Renay Thomas and Tyler Rich. It breeds NAVHDA registered German Shorthaired Pointers and specializes in gun dog training, working retriever training and pet obedience. The facility takes only 9-12 dogs at a time, and the trainer is a NAVHDA Judge.
Programs
Basic Obedience is typically a 6-week course covering sit, down, come, place, kennel and heel, with off-leash manners and e-collar conditioning. Started Gun Dog runs 3-4 months and produces a dog that searches, points, breaks at the flush and is acclimated to gunfire, with a natural retrieve shaped where the dog has one. Broke Gun Dog training, for dogs past their first year, takes as long as each dog needs. Retriever training is heavy on obedience and includes force fetch. Hunt test prep for NAVHDA and AKC, and handling at tests, are also offered. Birds are included in monthly rates.
Results and facility
The program counts 28 NAVHDA Natural Ability prized dogs and 11 NAVHDA Utility prized dogs, among other placings. Kennels have indoor/outdoor access with large runs, a wood stove for winter and exhaust fans for summer.
