About Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club
Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club has been doing this longer than anyone else in the region: "Your canine training resource in Hampton Roads since 1947."
What a club is, versus a school
The distinction matters and the site makes it: "Founded in 1947, HROTC is your trusted, community-based resource for canine training in Hampton Roads. As an AKC-affiliated nonprofit club, we offer high-quality instruction at a fraction of the cost of private training schools-because our mission is education, not profit." That translates into a number: "If you join our club you'll pay only $35 for training classes."
The classes
Coverage runs the full range without specializing: "Our classes are for dogs of all ages and owners of all experience levels. They include introductory puppy training all the way through advanced training. You can take classes just for learning and fun, or you can take classes to prepare you for AKC titles like Rally, Obedience and Scent Work. We also prep and test for Star Puppy, Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog Titles." Classes are small by policy – "Small Class Sizes -we limit all our classes to 6 or less."
Method, stated as club policy
Rather than a founder's philosophy, this is a rule that binds every instructor: "All HROTC instructors adhere to reward-based, positive training techniques."
Competition on the doorstep
The club runs its own AKC scent work trials, with dated events on the calendar across the autumn, so a member can train for a title and earn it at the same address. The wider framing is community rather than commercial: "Community-Focused -we reinvest in education, equipment, and outreach" and "Supportive Environment where learning is pressure-free and our members know and support each other and you!"
Practicalities
Registration runs by class session rather than continuously, so the current session and its dates are worth checking before you plan around it. Training questions go to the Training Director by email or text rather than to a sales line. There is no board and train, no in-home service and no behavior or aggression program here – this is a class club.
