About K9 Coach Dog Training

K9 Coach Dog Training works out of 720 Arnold Rd, Wilmington, NC 28412, and opens with the problems rather than the programs: jumping, leash pulling, counter surfing, barking, chewing, puppy training, crate training. "BIG or small we train them all!"

The four-step system

The site publishes its method as a numbered sequence. Marker training comes first – "establishing a clear line of communication to convey to our dog a reward system of what the desired behavior" is. The leash is then used as a guide, and step four is off-leash communication: "Once we can rely on our dogs understanding of the desired behaviors we are asking of them and utilizing our leash as a guide we progress into further off leash communication." The business calls this a "scientific based balanced training system" aimed at reliability "regardless of environment or distractions".

Programs

There is a foundations package and a Private Training Advanced package that builds on it and "will introduce you and your dog to off leash communication". A training camp format is also published. The published cue set is sit until released, place on a bed, cot, beach chair, towel or object until released, heel as loose-leash walking, down until released, and off, plus crate and house manners depending on the dog's and the owner's needs. Included follow-up lessons and what the site calls lifetime trainer support come after graduation, so that "you the owner, will be taught how to not only maintain but also continue to improve your dog's behavior, obedience, and your relationship".

Experience claimed

Over 30 years of combined training experience, with the site saying the trainers "have worked with sport dogs, rescue dogs, service dogs and everything in between".

Who it’s best for

Best for an owner who wants a stepped, tool-clear path to off-leash control with support after the program ends.

What they can help with

Sit, stay, recall and reliable commands, from beginner to advanced.
Early socialization, house-training and first manners for young dogs.
Calming a dog that barks or lunges at other dogs or people while on leash.
Behavior modification for unwanted or problem habits.
