About Know Better Do Better Dog Training LLC

Relationship-focused training in Groton

Know Better Do Better Dog Training (KBDB) is a Groton training business and doggie bakery at 266 Bridge St, built around the motto "When humans know better, dogs do better." It was voted 1st Place in Pet Training in The Day's Best of the Best Readers' Choice Awards 2026, and it serves Eastern Connecticut towns from Mystic and Stonington to Norwich, Ledyard, Waterford and New London, with a travel fee beyond 20 miles of Mystic.

Trainers and method

Head trainer Brittni Hyzer (CPDT-KA, FFCP, FDM) began assistant training in 2020, passed her certification exam in 2021 and completed Fear Free certification in early 2023. Trainer Marissa Quarles (CPDT-KA, KPA-CPT, FFCP, FDM) trained through the Karen Pryor Academy. Their four-step approach is to meet the dog's needs, manage the environment, teach new skills with food and toy rewards, and assign daily homework so practice makes permanent.

Programs

Group classes are kept to no more than 8 dogs, and private training suits dogs who need more attention or prefer not to be around other dogs. Clients mention private puppy sessions, puppy group dates, a six-week puppy class and Puppy Manners.

What owners say

One client wrote that "Brittni takes a whole pup approach," and another said she helped them understand "the science of dog behavior and operant conditioning."
