About One Happy Dog

Positive training for pet owners and sports competitors

One Happy Dog is presented throughout as the practice of Margaret Simek, described in the site's own subtitle as a dog trainer and dog sports specialist. The about page says she has dedicated her career to fine-tuning the art of positive training to get results for pet dog owners as well as for enthusiasts and trainers working at the highest levels of dog sports.

What is offered

The navigation lists private training, classes, memberships, online classes with a class navigator, and seminars and camps for professional trainers, which the site says sell out regularly. One listed seminar, Power Performance, is a one-day class on problem-solving training glitches and polishing behaviors, covering how to set up a session, select and hold criteria, generalize behaviors through environmental challenges, proof a dog's understanding of a skill, and use secondary reinforcers between sessions. Related listings cover Novice and Utility obedience preparation and general obedience problem solving.

Method and reach

The site says she stresses efficiency and clarity, gives the dog as much freedom of choice as possible, and avoids nagging, popping and scaring dogs; it credits her with pioneering the Simek Method of nose work training, using operant conditioning to teach dogs to choose odor over food. It lists competition titles in obedience, hunting, tracking and Nosework earned with non-traditional breeds. In-person classes are held at 403 Washington Blvd in Mundelein, and the contact page lists the North Shore and north-suburban communities served, while web seminars for professional trainers can be attended from anywhere.
