About The Refined Wolf

The Refined Wolf carries the strongest single credential claim in this metro, and it is one worth understanding: "I am the only Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner in Hampton Roads! I am committed to ongoing education to stay up to date with the most recent knowledge to help you reach your goals!" A KPA Certified Training Partner has completed an assessed program in reward-based training rather than simply attended a course, so unlike the vaguer master-trainer titles elsewhere in this directory, it is a credential you can check.

What is offered

Three training lines are published. Puppy: "Start your puppy right! Confident, socialized, and trained." Adult: "General obedience and behavior modification". And a third that few trainers here name at all – cooperative care, to "Help your pet be ready for routine grooming or vet visits". If your dog has to be sedated for nail trims or the vet, that is the specific service to ask about.

What it will take on

The problem list is long and covers most of what actually drives people to call a trainer: "Fear, Anxiety, Stress, Destruction, Chewing, Digging, Scratching, House Soiling, Reactivity, Jumping, Barking, Over-excitement, Rough Play, Nipping, and more!"

The approach

Owner-centered and explicit about it: "Pet training isn't just about your pet. In fact, the most integral part of the training process is you. That's why we work together to make sure your training plan fits your lifestyle and is tailored to what you need". And on individuality: "All pets have their own unique traits and mannerisms, and therefore require their own unique and specialized training." The aim is stated as teaching you the communication rather than just the dog the command – "I am focused on not only training your pet, but teaching you how to effectively communicate with them."

More than dogs

This is a pet-care practice as well as a training one: "We are not limited to just dog training and care. We can care for and help train animals of all types!", with horses and cats named specifically, daily stall cleaning and turnout listed among the services, drop-in visits and part or full day sitting, and "30 and 60 minute walks with training add-on options".

Practicalities

Pricing and online booking are handled through the site rather than by quote, which is unusually direct for this market. The service area is "Servicing Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton, and Newport News". Client reviews name the trainer and describe work on separation anxiety, barking and nipping, though the site itself does not formally introduce her by name.
