About Dog’s Best Friend

A one-man training business running since 1986

Dog's Best Friend has been training dogs in the greater Milwaukee area since 1986, and the owner is blunt about what that adds up to: "I founded Dog's Best Friend in 1986. I was only 19 years-old. Since then I have had no other career and no other income. I have succesfully trained well over 20,000 dogs and 40,000 humans." The business is deliberately small – "A small, friendly owner operated business," "Not a franchise" – and the site states he has refused to let it grow that way: "I am happy being a small, owner operated business that places reputation and results over money and promotion."

How it works now

The business is described as semi-retired and selective: "During my heyday I would sign up to 20 to 30 new clients every month. Now I am semi-retired and only allow 3 or 4. Which means, we need to talk. We need to meet. We need to make sure we like each other. We need to make sure that I am a good match for you and your fuzzy pupper." Everything starts with a free one-hour in-depth evaluation and assessment of the dog, with guidance on how to proceed.

Programs

The published course ladder runs: a 5-week Puppy Training package; a 5-week Basic package covering obedience commands, playful commands and behavioral issues; a 14-week Advanced package the site calls its most popular and thorough, going "from A to Z: Onleash, Off Leash, Behavioral Issues, Tricks, Advanced Communication"; and a 15-week Aggression Rehabilitation course, on which the owner claims "I have no equal." A Pay As You Go program is sold in 3-week increments, multi-dog families can add dogs for a nominal fee, and friends who sign up separately can sit in on each other's lessons. Trick programs in 3-week blocks follow advanced obedience. Results are advertised as guaranteed, and every lesson is videotaped with a 1-to-3-minute clip made public: "Thousands of videos can not lie. We do not cherry pick the videos."

What they can help with
