About See Spot Play

Play-centred behavior work and K9 Nose Work

See Spot Play's premise is in its tagline: "Take training from painful to joyful through the power of play." The practice works with owners whose "dog's barking and lunging" leaves them stressed, who are unsure how to help a shy dog, or who are "tired of having to play referee" between a new puppy and the rest of the household. The stated approach "enables you and your pup to tackle tough problems and develop skills without stress."

Three service lines

Behavior Consultation and Coaching covers the reactivity, fear and household-conflict work. Nose Work Coaching is built on K9 Nose Work, described as a way to "tap into that innate sniffing ability, and the joy the dog gets from it, by giving them scent puzzles to solve for food or toy rewards" – something the site says helps "both ends of the leash build a stronger bond" and that "nearly any dog and any human can participate" in. The Dynamic Dog Assessment addresses a cause many owners never consider: "Many common 'problem' behaviors (up to 80% of them!) actually have underlying pain or medical issues," and the assessment "provides a comprehensive analysis of your dog to identify potential discomfort and impact on behavior." Free Brain Games – snuffle box, touch, chin rest, the two-bowl game and an intro to nosework – are published on the site.

Trainer

Katie Homan, Ph.D., CNWI, DDP, brings "several years experience as a professional educator" and is "firmly committed to setting all learners up for success." Her continuing education listed on the site includes coursework with Kristina Spaulding (IAABC) on ethology and on living and learning with animals. She describes diving "headfirst into the science and practice of positive reinforcement training."
