About Tri-State Canine Obedience
Who they are
Tri-State Canine Obedience is run by Mike Dixon, listed on the site as "Mike Dixon, Owner." The site describes the business as "The Cincinnati area Canine Psychology Specialists with real experience!" and states it is "Serving Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky." The classroom address published is "Tri-State Canine Obedience, 100 Beacon Dr. Wilder, KY 41076."
The trainer
"In 2000 Mike started as a certified dog trainer with Pet Smart. He soon rose up the ranks to one of the top trainers in the company. At Pet Smart Mike also trained and certified student dog trainers. Mike built a solid foundation of experience working at Pet Smart, where he was responsible for training thousands of dogs with a wide variety of behavior issues. Mike also worked under various local trainers learning to work with problem solving and different types of canine aggression."
The site says he moved into training "from a long and distinguished career as a Critical Care Flight Medic," that he "is also perusing his degree as an Applied Animal Behaviorist specializing in aggression," and that "Mike started conducting Therapy Dog Training in 2007. He is very dedicated in writing his own program."
Method
"Our training philosophy is simple and effective: To work with a dogs natural instincts to promote the behavior that is desired and to promote a stronger bond between you and your dog. We do not use forceful or painful methods when training (your dog should never fear you when training). Along with positive reinforcement we take a balanced approach to training, with many training tools at our disposal (treats are not the only way to teach a dog to come). We follow current canine ethology, no more of the 'yank and crank' trainers of yesteryear."
Programs
The published list: "Puppy, Basic and Advanced Obedience Group Classes, Therapy Dog Training, In Home Programs, Problem Solving, Behavioral Modification, Off Leash Training, Private Consultations." The site adds that "Private lessons are available by appointment" and "Board & train is also available."
Group classes
"Group classes are a great way to get your dog versed in the basic commands, give your dog proper canine socialization, and help resolve bad behaviors… We use an easy to understand positive reinforcement style training, which transfers easily from our classroom to your home. Group classes are open to the whole family, and we encourage everyone to join in the training."
There is a stated guarantee: "Our group classes are guaranteed, meaning if you miss a class or just want to retake a class, there is no charge."
Vaccination requirements are published: "Dogs must have Rabies (one or three year), Bordetella (every 12 months), Distemper/Parvo vaccinations," uploaded before the first class.
Problems addressed
The site opens by naming them: "Are you tired of your dog pulling on the leash? Does it frustrate you that your dog barks every time it sees a person or animal and won't stop when you tell them to? Are you still having potty issues? Does your dog show aggression with people or other dogs? Does your dog jump on people when they walk into your house?"
A veterinarian's comment published on the site
"Mike Dixon is an excellent and professional trainer… I personally use him to train my aggressive dog. Mike spent a few hours working with the dog aggressive issues and by the end of just one session; I was able to walk my dog with no pulling, lunging or showing aggression toward other dogs… I exclusively recommend Mike Dixon and Tri-State Canine Obedience to all of my clients." – Michelle Quigley, D.V.M.
