About Plot Twist K9 Services

Plot Twist K9 Services is a training and grooming business in Poquoson with a tagline that suits it – "Because every dog deserves a good character arc".

What is offered

"Private and Group dog training lessons, day training, board & trains, and grooming services in Hampton Roads, Virginia." The reach is wide for a small operation: "We offer dog training services in Poquoson, Yorktown, Newport News, Hampton, Gloucester, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and surrounding areas!" Canine sports massage and online training sit alongside the rest.

The method, spelled out to the tool

This is the most detailed balanced-training statement in the metro, and it names the equipment rather than implying it: "At Plot Twist K9, we believe that dogs training is not a "one-size-fits-all" solution. We view every dog as an individual and meet them where they are at. This is why we used Balanced dog training methods. This means we use a combination of positive reinforcement and appropriate consequences. We may opt to utilize treats, toys, and affection as rewards. We may also utilize slip leads, prong collars, and e-collars depending on the dog and the owner's goals." It adds a limiting principle: "We opt to use minimally aversive methods in our training". If you want to know exactly what may be used on your dog before you book, this page tells you.

The trainer's record

The background is documented with results rather than adjectives: "Her career with dogs began over 10 years ago when she and her family were stationed in Washington State. She started off as a bather at a pet shop, then learned to groom dogs!" Her sport record is at national level – "Blake and Deja earned their AS3 title in Spring 2024, the highest level offered in American Schutzhund. Deja was just 3 years old, and the 9th dog ever to achieve this title." – and she and the same dog were "2023 American Schutzhund Nationals" winners, with BT certificates on two other German Shepherds.

Worth being clear about what that does and does not mean: it is a serious competitive record in a protection sport, and it says a great deal about her handling and obedience work. It says less about whether protection or bite-sport training is offered as a service. If that is what you want, it is a conversation to have, not an assumption to make.

Grooming, on a small scale

"We offer grooming in the comfort of our home for small dogs only at this time! Blake at Plot Twist K9 Services is experienced with many breeds and also offers hand-stripping for those coarse terrier coats! We don't book multiple dogs/clients at a time for grooms so it's 1:1 time with your dog." Hand-stripping is a genuinely scarce skill, and one dog at a time suits nervous dogs.

One thing to check

The site carries a banner reading "We are in the process of rebranding our business!", so the trading name and some service details may have moved on since it was written.
