Scruffy Dog Training and Consulting is a part-time, one-trainer business in Enfield. The trainer is CCPDT-KA certified and an AKC Approved Evaluator, and taught obedience, therapy prep, scent work and agility classes before returning to Maine and starting the business.

Classes

Group classes are its top recommendation because they mix training with socialization and real distractions. The schedule includes Manners and Life Skills in three levels, Canine Good Citizen, agility, scent work, antler shed hunting, rally and therapy dog practice and preparation, and classes run for four or six weeks.

Private sessions and evaluations

Private sessions are offered in the studio or in the owner's home within about 20 miles of Enfield, with a mileage charge beyond that. Owners who are unsure what their dog needs can book an evaluation, in which the trainer observes the dog, looks at its history, recommends a training plan and gives starting exercises; part of the fee can go toward a class or session bundle.
