About Service Paws
Service dog nonprofit in Syracuse
Service Paws is a Utah-based nonprofit in the Syracuse area, founded in 2017, that helps individuals with disabilities, veterans and first responders gain independence through trained service dogs. It specializes in owner-assisted service dog training using positive, humane methods that strengthen the bond between handler and dog.
How the program works
Training programs are affordable and income-based. Clients receive weekly 30-minute private sessions, with a veteran discount available, plus two group classes each month: one structured in-class session and one guided public outing to practice real-world skills. Service Paws supports handlers facing mobility impairments, diabetes, POTS, traumatic brain injuries, PTSD and other invisible disabilities, and many of its dogs come from rescue backgrounds.
Choosing a dog
Each candidate dog goes through an evaluation of temperament, physical health and behavior before training begins, followed by structured milestones and regular evaluations at 30 days, 90 days and throughout training. The program considers any breed on individual merit. Beyond training, Service Paws offers help selecting a candidate dog, connections to financial resources and peer support, and public education on disability rights and service dog etiquette.
