About Walk This Way Canine Training LLC

A force-free, small-group board-and-train

Walk This Way Canine Training is run by Vicky Horton out of Colerain Township, serving the greater Cincinnati area. The model is board-and-train: a "Stay-and-Train" program plus "Mind Your Manners" obedience packages, with one-on-one attention and a deliberately small number of dogs at a time, and overnight boarding options. Transfer sessions help hand the training back to the owner.

Method and credentials

The philosophy is explicitly positive-reinforcement and force-free. The site states the goal is "clear communication between dog and human, without using force or fear." Horton's credentials include certification from the CATCH Canine Trainers Academy, status as a Registered Veterinary Technician, and membership in the Pet Professional Guild, an organization associated with force-free training. Years in business aren't specified, though the site notes prior work as a veterinary technician for many years. Listed package pricing runs roughly $850 to $2,200. A good fit for owners who specifically want a gentle, force-free board-and-train with a vet-tech background.

What they can help with

Sit, stay, recall and reliable commands, from beginner to advanced.

I can’t say enough good things about Vicki! She worked wonders with my 10 week old puppy. After the first session he got very excited each time arrived. She is patient, professional and truly understands how to communicate with dogs and owners. The one on one training is effective, personalized, and done with kindness. She provided us with well-organized recaps and the tools needed to continue the training at home. I’ve seen such a positive change in my puppy’s behavior and obedience. I highly recommend Walk This Way to anyone who wants someone they can trust and is looking for top-notch training.

I couldn't be happier with the progress my puppy has made after just 3 three weeks of training! I loved that he could get one on one attention and learn so much all while I was at work! My puppy has some separation anxiety, and I thought he would be nervous to be left with someone he didn't know, but he loved Vicky! He ran straight to her and was so excited when he got dropped off for his second day of training. At the first training session, I almost cried because I was so proud of how much my puppy had learned in just 3 days! I could have never made that much progress trying to train him myself. Vicky was very professional, knowledgeable, and loving with my fur baby! Her services are worth every penny!

We took our Australian Labradoodle puppy, Penny, 4.5 months at the time, to train with Vicky at her training facility. We were scheduled to start a week sooner, but our puppy sustained a soft tissue injury to her leg from jumping and falling funny on it. Vicky was more than accommodating in pushing her training out a week to make sure Penny was healthy.

Vicky and I discussed my goals for training ahead of time and decided that we would focus on recall, place training, and loose leash walking. Vicky reminded me often that she trains the dog that is in front of her and not the ideal dog. Our puppy is a slow to warm puppy, and it took her a while to warm up each session. Vicky did everything possible to create a calm and fun environment for Penny. When we walked in each day, calm music was playing, an essential oil diffuser was going and there were some toys and a snuffle mat ready for Penny to engage with.

Vicky was helpful in coaching my husband, my kids, and me in ways to train Penny in the transfer sessions. Vicky provided all sorts of individualized instructions for continual training to eventually reach our goals with Penny. When I began looking for a trainer for Penny, I knew I wanted a trainer who would use positive reinforcement methods instead of e-collar training. Vicky is very skilled in delivering this method.

Penny is not yet proficient in any of the three main goals that I had for her. Before beginning the training, I did think that it would be possible to more reliably expect Penny to be able to learn recall, place, and loose leash walking with more accuracy, but she is entering puppy adolescence and has regressed in many areas (while making a few strides). Vicky did a refresher session to go over a few things and answered countless questions throughout all of the training sessions. We continue to work with her daily with the games and training commands that Vicky taught her (and us), and I am hopeful that she will catch on more reliably at some point.

My wife and I have a 6 month boxer mix that we brought to Vicky. His name is Tucker. He absolutely loved seeing Vicky. He seemed excited to learn and immediately clicked with her. She gave us the tools to continue his training at home as he grows. Everything seems to be going smoothly and he’s learning more each day. We would highly recommend Vicky to anyone wanting to have a positive training experience.

Vicky did a great job with Baby, our 1 yr old Corgi mix. Baby is more focused and eager to listen to commands.
