Dog Training Prices in Charlotte

Charlotte trainers publish a lot about how they sell training, and the spread between programs is wider than the difference between most of the trainers. What separates two quotes is usually the format and what comes with it, not the trainer's talent.

This page does not reprint rate cards, because published prices change. It explains what each format buys, what local trainers publish about consultations, equipment, follow-up and payment, and the questions that decide whether a quote is good value. Ask each provider for its current rates once you know which format you are pricing.

Consultations and evaluations: free or paid

Almost every trainer here has a first step, and the first fork is whether it is free.

Free is common. Dog Owner’s Academy offers a free in-home consultation, and Dog Envy Dog Training in Pineville offers a free consultation at your home. The Dog Wizard Charlotte and Highland Canine Training – Charlotte offer free evaluations, Desantos Dogs offers complimentary phone or in-person consultations and a free evaluation, and Free Will Animal Training starts with a free phone call. Command Canine in Cornelius has you complete a free online assessment before a free call, and The Dog Pros in Mooresville runs an evaluation in which you drop the dog off in the morning and collect it in the afternoon. Hakuna Matata Dog Care & Training, LLC requires a free phone consultation of every first-time client.

Paid is common too. Courteous Canine charges for its phone and in-home consultations, and The Dog Professor LLC in Belmont charges for evaluations and consultations held in person or online.

A paid consultation is not a bad sign. A free one that ends quickly in a package can be worse value than a paid one that lasts long enough to end in a plan.

What each format buys

Private and in-home lessons are the commonest way training is bought here: one trainer, one dog, one household, priced per session or package. The right purchase when the problem lives in your house.

Day training is the trainer doing the repetitions while you work. Obedient K9 Academy has you drop the dog at its facility for a full day of training while you are at work, Limitless Freedom Dogs offers drop-off and pick-up day training on a first-come, first-served basis, and Understanding Fido, LLC in Concord offers one-on-one lessons, day training in your home while you work, or a combination. For households with long commutes it is often the best value on this page, because it converts time you do not have into repetitions the dog does need.

Board-and-train is the metro's signature product: the dog lives with the trainer for weeks, and the handover at the end decides whether the money worked.

The specialist end is a different market. Desantos Dogs offers protection dog training, Holland K9 trains pet dogs to work as service dogs for their owners, and Lost Boys K9 Academy in Concord runs a longer board-and-train for aggressive or anxious dogs. Price these separately; they are a different product from pet training.

What is included, and what is not

Two quotes at the same number can be very different products, and local trainers publish enough detail to check.

Equipment. Hakuna Matata Dog Care & Training, LLC includes a martingale collar or gentle leader, an e-collar and remote, a leash and a command checklist in its board-and-train package. Mango Dogs Carolinas includes the e-collar it uses in the cost of the program, Dog Envy Dog Training includes a training collar in its board-and-train price, and The Dog Pack Training & Adventures includes a remote training collar, a place cot, a go-home training session and follow-up sessions in one package. Dog Training Elite Charlotte lists an e-collar, place cot and training kit as included, Obedient K9 Academy includes equipment such as an e-collar, slip leash, clicker and treat pouch, and Renaissance Dog Training LLC includes its preferred training tools with its one-on-one lessons. Elsewhere, ask.

Follow-up. Obedient K9 Academy includes unlimited group classes for the life of the dog with all of its programs. The Dog Professor LLC offers free lifetime lessons and lifetime trainer support on completion, The Dog Wizard Charlotte publishes lifetime support after graduation, Lost Boys K9 Academy offers lifetime support, and Learn and Live Dog Training describes ongoing post-graduation support.

Deposits, financing and payment plans

Deposits and financing. Hakuna Matata Dog Care & Training, LLC requires a non-refundable deposit to schedule with a trainer and offers PayPal Pay Later financing. Obedient K9 Academy and Mission Impossible K9, LLC in Mount Pleasant both answer the payment-plan question on their own sites, and Tails of Success Dog Training has a payment-plan page. If you pay over time, ask for the total rather than the installment, and read the deposit terms before you book.

How to compare two quotes properly

Four questions turn a price into a comparison.

How many contact hours? Ask how many sessions are included, how long each runs, and how many of them happen with you rather than without you.

Who does the repetitions? Owner coaching is cheaper per hour and works only if you do the homework. Day training and residency cost more because somebody else is doing the work. Indian Trail Dog Training LLC says plainly that its day training is concentrated, hands-on training for the dog, not a coaching program for the owner, and K’s K9’s in Kannapolis describes its trainer-led day training as “we do the work.” Knowing which you are buying is half the comparison.

What happens afterwards? This is where local differences are largest and where the value sits. Lifetime classes, lifetime support, lifetime lessons or nothing at all are all on offer here at similar headline prices.

Is this the right fit? Indian Trail Dog Training LLC states that if you are looking for the lowest-cost option it may not be the right fit. A trainer willing to say who it is not for is worth listening to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average cost of dog training in Charlotte?

There is no single going rate. Private and in-home lessons are priced per session or package, day training per day or program, and board-and-train per program, with the specialist end priced well above pet training. Decide the format first, then ask each provider for its current rates and what is included.

Why is board and train so much more expensive than lessons?

Because someone else is doing the repetitions, housing the dog and carrying the risk. A lesson package buys a limited amount of professional time and asks you to supply the rest; a residency buys weeks of daily work. Whether that is good value depends on whether you would have done the homework – and on the handover at the end.

Is a free consultation better than a paid one?

Not necessarily. Some trainers here offer free consultations or evaluations, and some, such as Courteous Canine and The Dog Professor LLC, charge for them. A paid consultation that assesses the dog properly and leaves you with a plan can be better value than a short free one that ends in a package.

Is anything included that I should ask about?

Yes – equipment and follow-up. Hakuna Matata Dog Care & Training, LLC includes collars, an e-collar and remote and a leash in its board-and-train package, and Obedient K9 Academy includes unlimited group classes for the life of the dog. Others include nothing, so ask before you compare.

Is the cheapest option ever the right one?

For a straightforward manners problem and an owner who will do the homework, often yes. For behavior cases the cheapest option is often the expensive one twice, because the work has to be done again. Indian Trail Dog Training LLC says on its own site that if you want the lowest-cost option it may not be the right fit, which is an honest way to frame it.
