About Dog Obedience Guy

In-home behavioral specialist

Dog Obedience Guy is run by Jonathan Washko, a Cincinnati trainer who has been training dogs since 2011 and describes himself as a certified behavioral trainer. His stated specialties are aggression, separation anxiety, leash reactivity, and fearful or shy dogs. The methodology is described clearly: positive reinforcement and behavioral remodification, with a balanced approach — and he explicitly states he does not use dominance or painful methods, reasoning that they can lead to fearfulness and aggression. The emphasis throughout is on teaching owners how their dog communicates and how to establish a leadership role.

Services

In-home training is the core of the business, on the premise that most behavioral issues occur in the dog's own environment, so that's where the plan is built and implemented. Behavioral remodification addresses issues like excessive barking, jumping, counter surfing, and digging by targeting the root cause. Aggressive dog training and work with fearful/shy dogs are highlighted as specialties, the latter starting in-home to build a foundation through desensitization. A two-week Board & Train covers basic commands and any additional requests, and a two-week off-leash program is also offered. He works alongside assistant Raymie Needham, who handles scheduling. Serving Cincinnati and surrounding areas; contact (513) 815-6623. A good fit for owners wanting one-on-one, in-home work on behavior and reactivity.

I am absolutely overjoyed with Jonathan’s training style! He is engaging, knowledgeable, thoughtful and supportive plus he creates training for your dog – not a cookie cutter approach. We have the most delightful 1.5 year old little rescue and he has saved our house! We could not get him potty trained and now I feel confident that he’s trainable! Jonathan read our dog perfectly and has equipped up with commands and skills to continue our positive forward moving training in a variety of scenarios after just 3 sessions! My husband and I are different styles of “parenting” and Jonathan worked to make both of us feel successful and excited to train Alfie. I could not be happier!

I adopted this guy in the beginning of December and had to wear boots around my house until Jonathan came out and worked his magic. I was at a loss of what to do and how handle the behaviors and Johnathan’s advice and expertise were so helpful. After just one session, I was able to go back to just wearing slippers/socks. I also really liked that Johnathan’s training was specific for just me and my dog. Each time we met with Jonathan, he asked about progress and asked me what I felt like needed to be worked on. I would highly recommend reaching out Jonathan, you won’t be disappointed.

Our cute little doggie would steal and guard things he wasn’t supposed to have, and the little sucker would actually snarl at us and even bite us when we tried to get it back. He really was pretty good otherwise, but something had to be done…. Jonathan listened to our story and observed how we interacted with our dog and made some suggestions on how to improve our overall relationship with him, and also gave us some specific training techniques to deal with the stealing/guarding/snarling/biting. The change has been pretty near miraculous. We had him back once for follow up and to address some other little issues. We would highly recommend this nice young man for your pet!

We adopted a stray from the shelter. Our dog was wonderful but reactive and we could not take him places and introducing him to new people was challenging. Jonathan was amazing! We are now able to take him places and even introduce people to our dog confidently and safely! Jonathan's methods work well and really helped us correct even some minor behavior problems. Well worth the money.

Ditto to the other reviewer who said Jonathan would actually earn 100 stars! We certainly recommend him for any dog, but he especially changed our lives!
Our Pitbull is a rescue & we worked with Jonathan for about 6 months. Our big guy was extremely fearful, anxious, overwhelmed, and unsettled. We are his third home and were that third home by the time he was just turning 2 yrs old.

We actually ended up doing 8 sessions over our time with Jonathan. Helping to ease a rescue dog's apprehensions is by no means a quick fix. Our big guy is literally a new dog because of Jonathan's patience, strong expertise, and understanding demeanor. He not only helped our guy to feel much more settled, but he also helped our family to best understand the WHY behind our poor guy's struggles and he always had ideas with easy to understand explanations. Jonathan was exactly the trainer we needed in our home to help a high stress rescue (and his hoomans!)
